How to choose carpet and stains for stairs in an entryway or hall.
Q. We have an 80-year-old Tudor city house. The existing stairs have 5 coats of white paint up to the second floor and grey paint up to the third. We’re thinking of covering the stairs with sisal carpeting. We’ve already removed the paint from the banister and are thinking of staining it. The spindles are white. What will match my red oak floors?
A. Refinishing your staircase is a great way to instantly update your home. Leave the spindles and banister white and strip and stain the stair treads (steps) like your floor or a little darker. Repaint the stair risers (vertical surfaces) white and either paint or stain the handrail even darker than the risers. This will result in a clean, finished staircase.
Since you’ve already stripped the banister though, staining the banister the same as the handrail is one option, but it will make the staircase seem a little darker.
A sisal runner on the stairs is a great alternative to paint. Not only will it enhance the look of the stairs by warming up the staircase visually but it will also provide a non-slip surface on the stairs. Natural sisal will provide a more slip-resistant surface, but either 100 per cent wool or 50/50 wool-synthetic sisal will be much more comfortable on bare feet.

How To Decorate A Foyer
Turn a large, open space into a welcome space by treating the entryway like a room.
Q. We have a very large foyer with an 18-foot high ceiling. Our
floors are tile with area rugs, and we have a circular staircase. The
problem is that the open space tends to feel rather cold. What would you
suggest to warm up a large space?A. Think about making your foyer one of your “rooms”.
A foyer sets the tone for the rest of the house and actually plays an important role as your home’s first impression. Treat the space just as you would a living room, for instance, and you will instantly create a warm, inviting entry space.
If space allows, consider adding a round pedestal table, that will mirror the circular staircase, in the centre of the foyer. Hang a chandelier above to frame the table and add flowers or a sculptural piece to top the table for a formal, welcoming area. If the floor space is not large enough to accommodate a centre table, place a demi-lune or console table against a wall and flank the table with wall sconces.
A large, framed mirror over the table will add depth and is also perfect for last-minute primping before leaving the house. Framed prints will also work to add a finishing touch to the walls.
A table will not only add visual interest and a “room-like” feel, but will functionally hold keys or cell phones. Add an upholstered chair, positioned in a corner, for a comfortable place to remove shoes. A bench along a wall is a perfect solution to a smaller foyer.
Area rugs are a must for an entryway. Multi-coloured oriental rugs can be replaced with neutral sisal in the summer months and area rugs will help frame the “welcoming space” of your foyer.

How To Hang A Flat-Panel Television
Keep these suggestions in mind when mounting a TV above a living room or basement fireplace.
Q. How high should I hang my flat-panel TV over my fireplace?
— H.M., Châteauguay, Que.
A. Your flat-panel TV should be mounted at the same height as you would hang a piece of art of the same size over your fireplace. Depending on the height of your mantel — or if you don’t have one, the top of the fireplace — hang the TV four to 12” above. If your mantel is higher than four feet, then hang the TV no more than 6" inches above.
Mounting your TV above your fireplace means it will be higher than normal (ideally, your TV should be at eye level for comfortable viewing) so you may want to consider mounting the TV onto a tilting and panning wall mount so that you don’t have to crane your neck to watch television and can also enjoy the view from anywhere in the room.
To help you centre the TV to your fireplace and decide on the most pleasing height before you start drilling holes, test out its placement by cutting out a paper rectangle the same size as your unit and tape it to the wall. Evaluate its placement from a sitting position and adjust it accordingly.
Here are some additional points to keep in mind when mounting a TV above a fireplace:
Consider having the TV installed by a professional or at least have extra help on hand to help lift the TV for mounting. Some of the larger sets weigh well over 100 lb.
Secure the mounting bracket to two studs for extra support.
Test out the radiant heat that emits from your fireplace as it could greatly reduce the lifespan of your TV. Assess this by starting a fire and place your hand over the area where your TV will be mounted. If it feels considerably hotter than room temperature, you should consider placing your TV elsewhere in the room.

Laundry & Mudroom Design
How to design an entryway laundry-plus-mudroom to store cleaning, outdoor and sports gear.
Q. I am renovating my great grandparents’ home (built in 1912) and would like some advice on turning the original kitchen into a mudroom/laundry room. The space no longer functions as a kitchen and has an entrance from the backyard.
— S.P., Charlottetown, PEI
A. A mudroom is all about organization, so try not to skimp on space when planning it out. Since the entrance is off your backyard, the activities you enjoy doing there will play an important role in defining your storage needs. Do you like to garden? Do you entertain outdoors? An interior designer can help you determine what kind of storage you require and come up with an efficient layout for a mudroom/laundry room space. Your designer can also help tie the room’s décor in with the rest of your home and assist you in finding a good cabinet maker.
For any mudroom/laundry room design, be sure to select flooring that is sturdy, non-skid, easy to clean and that hides dirt. Keep the space bright and inviting, with lots of good multi-directional and task lighting, and as much natural light as possible.
Here are a few ideas you may want to include in your mudroom/laundry room:
Consider building a closet with sliding doors to house a stacked washer and dryer that can be hidden when not in use. Be sure to incorporate a good-sized counter or table surface for folding laundry, as well as wall-mounted shelving for holding laundry supplies.
A built-in bench for donning shoes and boots, with drawers beneath for mittens, gloves, footwear or other seasonal items will keep clutter at bay.
Hooks over the bench can hold everyday jackets and coats for easy access while a closed closet can house seldom-used outdoor gear, umbrellas, etc.
If gardening is your hobby, consider installing a potting sink. Combined with a wall-mounted faucet, a potting sink is useful for watering plants, filling buckets and rinsing pots. Storage cabinets below can house tools, containers, fertilizers and other gardening must-haves.
A mudroom can also double as a home office: Create a home management area with a custom-built desk, cabinets and cork board.
Consider adding a walk-in pantry for storing dry goods and extra dishes.
If you have pets, a low-traffic corner can become a designated feeding area for your furry friends. Pull-out pantries are ideal for holding large quantities of dry pet food. Baskets can keep toys, brushes and other pet essentials tucked away, while wall-mounted hooks can hold leashes.
Create a recycling centre for sorting and storing your recyclables: keep blue bins out of sight inside a large covered custom-built box that when closed, can also double as a bench.

Decorating Up A Staircase
Follow the angle of the stairs or create a grouping on a landing.
Q. What can I do along our staircase to the second floor in our new home to create something different on the walls? I like pictures of the family but I wouldn’t know how to put them on the incline.
A. How you place your pictures on your stairway wall depends on your style and design theme throughout your home. Don’t feel as though you have to follow the angle of the stairs when hanging artwork or pictures on a stairway wall. That is one way of designing your wall, but think about grouping the pictures in a rectangular shaped arrangement or even oval, depending on the size of the wall.
Several pictures hung as an arrangement should have a common thread, like frame colour or shade or mat colour. Visual subject matter, such as the family pictures you are decorating with, is another theme that works cohesively.
A good starting point for planning any artwork grouping is to first sketch your ideas on paper and then choose the arrangement that best suits your style. Or lay the pieces you're considering on the floor until you're happy with the grouping, take a photo and then use the photo to remind you of what goes where.

How To Choose Colours, Tiles And Furniture
Choose three paint colours for the interiors in your house, plan your rooms and considering hiring a designer.
Q. I am building a new house and I am feeling overwhelmed by having to choose colours, tiles, new furniture, etc. I am afraid of making the house look choppy with a lack of flow from one room to the next. Where do I start? I don’t want colours and a design that will look outdated before I finish building my house. I would love to have an elegant but functional home.
— S.N., Surrey, BC
A. Picking out every detail for your home is intimidating. But with a bit of research into what’s out there and determining what style you naturally gravitate towards, you can quickly narrow down the many options. First, gather a stack of current decorating and interior design magazines and rip out or flag pages of the homes, furnishings and colours that you love. Once you’ve gone through this process, you should have a good idea of your tastes in home design: Do you like a modern, rustic, or contemporary look? What about traditional, minimalist or eclectic? Putting a binder together of all your favourite images with notes and lists of retail resources will help you stay organized by gathering all your ideas in one place.
Once you’ve determined what style you like, then start thinking about colours. Choose three colours for your home and use the 60/30/10 trick: Your base colour covers 60% of a room (the walls), a secondary colour counts for 30% (upholstery or flooring) and a third colour represents 10% (accents like throw cushions). This method helps to create a room that is pleasing to the eye by appearing grounded. Most paint companies offer sample cards showing three or four paint chips that work well together which makes choosing a colour scheme easier than ever. Use your chosen colour combination in varying saturation levels throughout your home and be sure to have a some black in each room, too — it helps anchor a space. Since you are concerned about your home appearing outdated in a few years, avoid bold or trendy colours for walls or furniture and stick to neutrals instead, using colours with a kick for accessories.
Be sure to plan out your rooms on paper and play around with furniture placement prior to going shopping (there are also great software programs out now that allow you to easily do this on the computer). Plan your home room by room and take your time. Most furniture retail stores now offer on-line catalogues which show pricing and sizes, making window shopping from home a breeze; before you head out to the stores, you can choose a few pieces that fit into your budget and the rooms you have in mind for them.
If you are still feeling overwhelmed — and especially since you are building a new home — consider hiring a professional interior designer to help you through this process. A designer can guide you in determining your tastes and lifestyle requirements and will work to create a cohesive look and flow in your home, making it truly functional and effective. A designer will offer recommendations for finishes (like flooring and wall coverings), fixtures (lighting, plumbing and appliances), furniture and storage. They should also have great retail (and open to trade-only) resources at their fingertips and can help you find what you need quickly. A designer can save you money in the long run by guiding you through the process of creating a wonderful space to be enjoyed for years to come.

Hanging Lights
Guidelines for installing a dining room pendant, hanging light or chandelier.
Q. I’m in the process of buying a chandelier for our dining room and I’m wondering what height it should be from the dining room table? I’m looking at one with 4 candles and shades.
A. In general, a dining room pendant or hanging light should be installed at approximately 30” from the top of the table. Have someone hold the light at various heights until you find the one you like best.
If the chandelier is a more opaque type, with a frosted glass bowl or very ornate with crystal pendants, it’s a good idea to hang it a little higher, so any artwork on the walls adjacent to the table will be less obstructed.
A candelabra chandelier like the one you are considering buying is a great adaptable fixture as you can change the look of your chandelier simply by either removing the shades and having bare light bulbs for a more sparkly effect, or changing the shades to vary the look and style of the lamp, depending on your design style or room scheme. Make sure to put your new fixture on a dimmer switch so you have the option of adjusting the light.

Refinish A Dining Table
Choose a great paint colour and thoroughly prepare surfaces for a perfect finish.
Q. I have an old French Provençal dining room set with a table, chairs and buffet. I am thinking of painting it but don’t know how it is done. Can you suggest a colour to paint? The scheme is blue now and I do not want to paint them white or black. I also need 8 handles for the buffet.
— Jane Kaufeld
A. Your dining room set sounds lovely. If you want to keep the feeling of a French Provençal dining room, painting your furniture white would be fresh and stunning with a blue background, but if you really don’t want to go white, consider painting your set a buttery yellow like Pratt & Lambert’s Spring Yellow. Depending on the colour and tone of blue you currently have as your background, this neutral yellow should work well with most blues.
Start by paying a visit to your local hardware store. Before painting any wood furniture, it is very important to prepare the surfaces properly, or the new paint will not adhere well. Your pieces might only need a light sanding before paint, but wiping down the furniture with TSP (trisodium phosphate) will help prepare the surface for paint. Once you’ve wiped down the wood, lightly but thoroughly sand and remove the dust. Clean with TSP.
Apply one coat of primer before you apply the paint. This will also help the coverage of the paint. You may need two coats of paint after the primer, depending on the current colour of the wood, and make sure to let the first coat dry before applying the next. Light sanding between coats will remove any dust specks that might have stuck to the paint. Let the final coat dry thoroughly before setting anything on the surface.
For slight contrast, create gauzy off-white slipcovers for the chairs that can be used in the summer, and soft, coordinating seat cushions that can be used in the winter. Choose a pretty Provençal fabric that will set off the blue of the room and the yellow of your dining set. Ticking could work well here too. Use either the same fabric or a coordinating one to create a table runner.
We think simple iron drawer pulls for the buffet will contrast wonderfully with the yellow. Depending on your budget, several hardware stores will carry affordable wrought iron hardware that is sure to work in your space and add interest to the new colour of the buffet.

Formal Dining Room
How to create a sophisticated look that carries from dining room to living room in an open concept space.
Q. I have an open concept living/dining room with a window and a patio door. I would like to put up some window coverings like pleated drapes in earth tones in a light material over sheer curtains. Do you have any suggestions? Also, how can I make the dining room look more formal?
— J.P., Ottawa
A. To achieve a more formal appearance in your space, look for drapery with a bit more weight than what you currently have hanging with your sheers. Pleated solid or wide-striped silk in a neutral tone will add elegance to the room and will work nicely with your current wrought iron drapery rods.
You can further increase the feeling of formality in your dining room through lighting, floor coverings, artwork and accessories. From your photos, it’s difficult to tell exactly what you already have in place for lighting in the dining space, but I can suggest installing a sizeable pendant over your dining table, such as a crystal chandelier for some sparkle and glamour. If you would prefer something less grand, a five-arm candelabra pendant with linen shades would also give the dining area a more urbane appearance.
Think about adding a Persian rug beneath your dining table and chairs — you’ll want it to be large enough to extend 18” beyond the back of the chairs. Artwork that has a classic look, such as a series of framed black and white photographs or prints in muted colours will also give the room a more formal feeling. Accessories like sterling silver bud vases, a large crystal or clear glass decorative bowl and some antique nickel candelabras will help complete the look.
Since this is an open concept space, consider carrying the formality beyond the dining area and into the living area, again through lighting, floor coverings, art and accessories.

Decorating A Screened-In Porch
How to create an inviting and practical sitting and dining area on a screened porch.
Q. Our newly built country house has a screened-in porch that we would like to transform into a summer dining and sitting area. It is all cedar including the ceiling and is situated right off our kitchen. I would like to stain the floor a colour (but not the walls), and paint the table my husband just built, above which I will hang an iron votive candle chandelier. The chairs could be painted as well, but I am not sure. I would also like to set up an area to read and snooze with lots of cushions at the other end of the room. Can you recommend a colour scheme for the furniture and fabrics? I was thinking of painting the table a green colour and taking it from there.
A. Instead of staining the floor a colour, consider finishing it with a clear coat, or staining the floor a shade slightly darker than the natural wood. Although you want to leave the walls as they are, painting them a cream colour would instantly brighten up the room.
A jute or sisal area rug under the table in a natural straw colour is easy to clean, and will offer you the comfy look you want to achieve.
Roller shades or roman blinds in semi-opaque cream with faded ticking stripes, or faded fern pattern (to mimic the outdoors) installed on your windows and door will change the room dramatically.
Paint the table a sage green like Ralph Lauren’s Twin Lakes, and the chairs a creamy white like Whitecap, also by Ralph Lauren, for a breezy, summer country look. Paint the door this same white for continuity, and add seat cushions in a ticking stripe in similar shades as the blinds to unify the colours.
For your sitting area, choose fabrics that coordinate with the new window shades. Mix cushions in soft ticking stripes, floral or fern patterns, and solids. Choose colours in shades of sage green, cranberry, cream and yellow, for starters. A loveseat or chaise slipcovered in cream cotton will be a bright, neutral background for your cushions, and a washable slipcover for a country home is both pretty and practical.
Add accents like a table runner in a red stripe or fern pattern, two large hurricane lanterns to top the table, and a small armchair beside the door for taking off shoes.
Replace your small bench with a small console or dresser to act as a buffet. Paint this piece white or sage, and hang a grouping of photos, artwork or mirrors above, all in similar frames, for unity.

Art For A Bare Wall
How to plan a themed grouping of photographs and framed prints in a dining or living area.
Q. I have one absolutely bare wall in my dining/living room. It measures 7-1/2’ by about 8-1/2’. I would like to hang pictures on this wall, but I don’t know how many pictures I should hang. My favourite pictures are usually ones with flowers. I don’t want to hang just one picture. Please tell me how many pictures I should hang and how they should be hung.
A. You have a nice-sized wall on which to hang a thoughtfully planned grouping of your favourite photographs or art. You can also mix photos and art, as long as the frames are similar. Since flowers are your passion, choose several floral themed photos or artwork.
They don’t have to be the same size. In fact, your art wall will be more interesting if the sizes of the prints are a little different. Depending on the style of your room, choose either all wood, all black or all white frames, and it’s best if they are matted for even more consistency.
Place all of the ready-to-hang pictures on the floor in front of the wall, and play around with the placement until you have an arrangement you are happy with. Keep the distance between frames about 3 inches apart so they seem more like a unified grouping of art instead of a bunch of frames floating on a wall.
If you have the space, place a narrow console table on the wall under the art grouping, and set 2 lamps centered on the table. This will highlight not only the artwork, but will give a little more interest to the wall, including a surface upon which to place an extra dish or two when needed.

Liven Up A Too-Beige Bedroom
Q. I recently constructed a headboard for my bedroom and now I realize that I have too much of the same colour happening in the space. What could I change to make the room appear more inviting?
— F.L., Moncton, N.B.
A. Bravo on your DIY upholstered headboard! I applaud your use of neutrals and you’re definitely on the right track with your contemporary style bedding and layered pillows. By adding a bit of colour and contrast, this room can easily become the inviting retreat you’re looking for.
To add more oomph, start by changing the wall colour. As you’ve pointed out, your current colour — a nice deep caramel — is too similar to your headboard fabric, which gives the room a flat appearance. You could go as light as a creamy oyster, or if you prefer a deep wall colour, think about a warm gray.
Bedding with colour and pattern can add lots of visual interest to a bedroom and make it appear much more welcoming. Think about pairing damask patterned bedding in green-blue, topped with deep brown quilted shams and a coverlet. This colour combination will definitely inject your room with a sense of elegant comfort.
Your bedside tables and lamps feel a bit dated next to your fabulous headboard. Think about replacing them with tables in an espresso finish to match the headboard frame. The weighty look of heavier nightstands on each side of your bed will counterbalance the height of the headboard and the drawers will give you lots of extra storage space.
I suggest replacing your current table lamps with ones that complement the height and straight lines of the headboard. Purchase something with a chunky glass base that is contemporary and glamorous, and will add a luxe feeling to the space.
Finally, the small framed pictures beside your bed look a little lost. Think about removing them and hanging some fairly large framed black and white photography on the wall perpendicular to your bed instead.

Refreshing A Builder-Beige Bedroom
Q. We have a large principal bedroom that’s builder beige. I’m looking to create a more contemporary room. The broadloom is cream coloured and we have yet to purchase bedroom furniture so we can do just about anything now. One day, I would like to add a chandelier and incorporate some silver and glass accents. I would love some suggestions on colour schemes; wall colours (for bedroom and ensuite), drapery and upholstered furniture. It’s so beige now that I don’t know where to start.
— W.H., Oakville, Ont.
A. Since you have glass and silver finishes in mind and want to hang a chandelier in your bedroom, why not create a sophisticated, romantic space with a touch of classic Hollywood glamour? Start with a paint palette of ivory, gold, silvery grey, mauve and deep steel grey in your bedroom (and take this through to your ensuite in lighter tones) that will make for a luxe look that is soft and inviting without being too feminine.
For this look, you’ll want to introduce lots of texture into the space through velvets, silk, and quilted or matelassé fabrics and even fake fur that can be used on bedding, blankets, cushions and throws.
The unusual curve in the window wall is an architectural detail that will work well with this style to create an elegant, flowing space. To add even more glamour to the room, dress the window with silk taffeta drapes in shades of gold or ivory.
For your bedroom furniture, choose a contemporary style in a deep espresso wood stain. A couple of grey or taupe velvet upholstered slipper chairs placed by the window would also look incredibly luxurious and sophisticated.
Consider having a tufted, camelback upholstered headboard custom-made using an ultra-suede fabric in taupe or grey. Finally, you could purchase a couple of glass column and silver-based accent lamps for your bedside tables to complete the look.

How To Warm Up A Stark Bedroom
Add layers and texture to make a room more inviting and comfortable.
Q. Our principal bedroom in our new home is stark and empty-looking. Walls and carpet are neutral in colour, our bedroom set is dark cherry and the bedding is white. We get lots of light from a wall of windows. How can I make our bedroom feel cozier and less institutional-looking? I would like to do something with chocolate brown and I am thinking of hanging black and white photos. Help!
— J.W., Rockwall, Ont.
A. The easiest way to make your bedroom feel cozy and comfortable is to introduce more texture, layers and details to the space.
Layering pillows on your bed as you would see in a plush hotel suite (two euros at the back then four standard and one boudoir) will give your room a luxe, welcoming feeling. White pillow shams with classic, hotel style stitching in chocolate brown would work well with your current all-white bedding and help to incorporate chocolate brown into the space. Add another textural layer to your bed by topping it with a soft quilted coverlet that can be folded at the foot of your bed when not in use.
For added texture and interest, consider placing an area rug over top the existing carpet under your bed and bedside tables. Choose a rug with a neutral background that has a pattern in muted browns or sage green. If you don’t already have drapery that you are happy with, think about purchasing panels in luxurious pleated silk in a taupey brown to add drama and more luxurious texture to the space.
I’m not sure what you have for lighting in the space, but interesting table lamps in a warm finish will add interest. Consider handsome, boxy lamps that have a classic contemporary look and geometric lines.
Your idea of hanging framed photography in your room is a good one. However, if you are concerned with the space appearing too stark, sepia tone photography will appear a touch softer and warmer than black and white. Look for a series of three similar-themed framed photographs to hang above or on the wall next to your bed.
Finally, if your space doesn’t feel filled up enough with your current bedroom furniture, consider adding a sitting and reading area in one corner, preferably by the window. Place a comfortable armchair in the corner that works best, along with a small side table in dark cherry topped with a pharmacy style reading lamp in antique brass. With these simple pieces, you’ll create a welcoming spot for curling up with a cup of tea and a good book.

How To Paint Hardware
Spray paint old kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and office handles to look like new in nickel or pewter.
Q. The accessories in my bedroom are brass and I want to switch to a pewter shade. Can I paint or spray-paint the handles on my oak dressers that are now brass? Some of the handles are oddly shaped and I cannot find replacements. If I can do this, what type of paint do you suggest I use?
A. Painting existing hardware is a very inexpensive, simple way to update the look of your furniture and room, whether on a bedroom dresser, an office desk or kitchen cabinets.
If you are thinking of switching your brass hardware to a pewter colour, go for either a satin or brushed nickel, or pewter finish, not a polished look. A matte finish will have a longer style life than polished, and is easier to pair up with other accessories.
Remove the hardware from your furniture and clean it in soapy water. If the finish on the hardware is very glossy, we recommend cleaning it with TSP (trisodium phosphate) to prepare the surface so the new paint adheres to it properly. Once the hardware is completely dry, lay the pieces out on a drop sheet or newspaper and spray them with paint suitable for metal.
Rust-Oleum’s Tremclad silver hammered finish is a good choice. Once the hardware has dried, inspect the handles to make sure the paint has covered all the nooks and crannies, giving them another coat if necessary. Again, once they are all completely dry, affix them onto your dressers and enjoy the new look.

Curtains And Wallpaper
Q. I have blue and white wallpaper in small leaf shapes. The top half of my walls is in white with blue small leaf, and the bottom half is blue with white small leaf. I love the wallpaper, but need to change the curtains.
My bed is black wrought iron and my quilts are antique plain white jacquard. Please suggest a colour to bring into the room for the curtains, and whether floral or plain fabric would work best.
— Sharon
A. Your bedroom sounds lovely. A large floral pattern might be too busy with the leaf pattern of the wallpaper, but simple white curtains with a thin yellow, blue and black ticking stripe would be a wonderful contrast to the blue and white wallpaper, and would tie in the black of the wrought iron bed frame.
The monochromatic scheme you currently have can also be enough on its own just with the addition of blue and white toile curtains. Try to find a blue toile that is in similar tone to the blue in your wallpaper.
Using black as the contrast colour in the curtain rod, small accessories and picture frames would be a bold companion to the blue and white colour scheme. Make sure the curtains just touch the floor, and to keep the look current, use silver or black grommets or use a black wrought iron rod with clip hooks and simply hem the curtain fabric all around.
But if you are looking for a little extra colour, try adding small throw pillows in a pretty Provençal yellow fabric on your bed and a vase of yellow flowers on your bedside table.
