Refreshing A Builder-Beige Bedroom

Q. We have a large principal bedroom that’s builder beige. I’m looking to create a more contemporary room. The broadloom is cream coloured and we have yet to purchase bedroom furniture so we can do just about anything now. One day, I would like to add a chandelier and incorporate some silver and glass accents. I would love some suggestions on colour schemes; wall colours (for bedroom and ensuite), drapery and upholstered furniture. It’s so beige now that I don’t know where to start.

A. Since you have glass and silver finishes in mind and want to hang a chandelier in your bedroom, why not create a sophisticated, romantic space with a touch of classic Hollywood glamour? Start with a paint palette of ivory, gold, silvery grey, mauve and deep steel grey in your bedroom (and take this through to your ensuite in lighter tones) that will make for a luxe look that is soft and inviting without being too feminine.

For this look, you’ll want to introduce lots of texture into the space through velvets, silk, and quilted or matelassé fabrics and even fake fur that can be used on bedding, blankets, cushions and throws.

The unusual curve in the window wall is an architectural detail that will work well with this style to create an elegant, flowing space. To add even more glamour to the room, dress the window with silk taffeta drapes in shades of gold or ivory.

For your bedroom furniture, choose a contemporary style in a deep espresso wood stain. A couple of grey or taupe velvet upholstered slipper chairs placed by the window would also look incredibly luxurious and sophisticated.

Consider having a tufted, camelback upholstered headboard custom-made using an ultra-suede fabric in taupe or grey. Finally, you could purchase a couple of glass column and silver-based accent lamps for your bedside tables to complete the look.
