A Nantucket cottage exhibits an outsize personality that enhances its tiny dimensions.
The Cottage
Against the sun-bleached landscape of Nantucket island off the coast of Massachusetts, this tiny home bursts like a brilliant poppy from the gray-green beach grass. When the current owners bought the house, cobbled together from vintage fishing shacks, the interiors already were painted a kaleidoscope of hues -- not just in different rooms, but in some places each wall was a different shade ranging from coral to turquoise to lemon. The new owners decided to keep the interior palette just as it was, then turned to Nantucket-based interior and architectural designer Deborah Timmermann, of Island House/Deborah Timmermann and Co., to help with furnishings. "The only way to work with these colors was not to be subtle," says Deborah.
"Everything that we added had to be bold as well." The house's dimensions -- less than 600 square feet with one bedroom -- also dictated that every piece be chosen to function efficiently. And because the owners have children and friends who visit, they wanted full-size, comfortable furniture in the living room and den. "Surprisingly, the bold colors and full-scale furniture make the space feel larger," says Deborah. "Colors that might be overwhelming in a larger house make this one come alive."
In the Living Room
The stripes on the living room sofa unify the multicolored walls and floors. Lobster-hued walls contrast cheerily with the muted tone of the dunes right outside the door.
Bright and Sunny
The door from the living room to the den suggests artwork, outlined in bold colors and crowned with a fish motif. An apple green wicker chair "has enough punch to hold its own," says Deborah. The weathered shutters above the desk open to reveal a mirror.
