Study Hour

A marble counter, salvaged from a bakery, tops a desk in the study. The hickory chair once stood in Yellowstone National Park's Old Faithful Inn. "People can be afraid of white, but between washable and stain-resistant fabrics, it's easy to take care of," says Jeanne Moseley. "I've got two kids and two dogs!"

Modern Country Table

Donghia stacking chairs add contemporary contrast to a checked tablecloth in the dining room.

Two Peas in a Pod

In the kids' room, wool trading blankets adorn beds from Bear Mountain Mercantile. Jeanne bought the tramp-art table at a Seattle antiques market; the burled-wood lamp is also vintage.

Bright idea! Whitewashed frames unite, and elevate, paint-by-numbers art.

A Family-Friendly Spot

Make Over a Traditional Cabin with White

Jeanne and Paul Moseley love Montana — but not its stereotypically heavy, dark home decor. See how they went against the grain by lightening things up with one simple color.

An Inviting Guest Room

A plaid blanket by L.L. Bean, laid across an iron bed from Bear Mountain Mercantile, adds color and pattern to the guest room.

Bright Idea: Turn old sporting goods into witty wall art with white spray paint.

Snuggle by the Fireplace

Slipcovered Shabby Chic sofas, heaped with hand-sewn pillows, flank the living room fireplace. The leather armchair is by Jean de Merry; the Moseleys had the small antler side table custom made.

Picture-Perfect

Jeanne found this landscape painting, as well as the photo-transfer lampshade, at local antiques shops.

Inside a Warm Victorian Home - Part 4

Side Porch

The natural textures inside her house reflect what's going on outside, where a large garden supplies Ramekins, the cooking school that Sarah and Darius, a developer and governmental studies professor at Berkeley, own in town. "We also keep bees all over the property, and I admire their tidy industry," Sarah says. Taking a cue from those busy creatures, she jars their honey and sells it at the cooking school.

In this photo: This straw bee skep, designed by German sculptor Guenther Mancke, keeps things abuzz on the side porch. The panels are painted Sierra White by Kelly-Moore.

Backyard

The taxidermied birds that adorn Sarah's home are echoed by the chirps and clucks of live ones: finches that brighten up the kitchen, and a flock of hens roosting in a backyard coop.

In this photo: Tyge feeds the family's chickens; the coop was built using wood reclaimed from a derelict shed on the property.

Vegetable Garden

The Andersons grow vegetables—cabbage, tomatoes, onions, and more—for their cooking school, Ramekins.

The Family

In this compelling house, Sarah has preserved more than late-1800s architecture. She's nurturing a slower way of life, growing her family's food, preparing meals from scratch, and honoring the history of useful objects. The very windows of the home provide the lens for her old-fashioned outlook: The glass has been melting down for the past century or so. During the renovation, Darius had pushed to replace them with more practical double panes, but Sarah fought to keep the originals. "I had to have that warped, wavery effect," she says. "It makes life appear so interesting."

In this photo: The couple elicits a laugh from Tyge. Their front stoop repurposes bricks from their home's original foundation.

Guest Bedroom

A late-1800s French dress form takes up residence in a guest room. The upholstered Duxiana bed is clad in striped pillowcases from Restoration Hardware, a seed-stitch blanket by Diane von Furstenberg, and a Barbara Barry throw pillow. All of the home's jute carpets are Rugworks.

Playroom

Sarah purchased the cherry bed for this guest bedroom, which doubles as Tyge's playroom, at a local antiques mall. The framed poster advertises a 1930s circus.

Bathroom

For the master bathroom, Sarah combined a new tub by Waterworks with an antique table and milking stool. Here, as in the kitchen, she covered the floor in terra-cotta tiles.

Bright idea: With the addition of custom-cut mirrors, a cast-off window frame becomes an impressive full-length looking glass.

Exterior

Sarah and Darius's 1875 Victorian sits on five acres in Sonoma, California.

Little Vignettes

Among the collections displayed in the dining room: transferware, alder-wood baguette boards, and rattan wine baskets. Sarah is also an avid collector of of all things avian—taxidermied birds, nests, and cages.

Living Room

With such an eccentric mix of decor, Sarah felt bold color would be a bad idea. "If I had put up chintz wallpaper, you wouldn't notice the architectural shape of a birdcage or the patina of a wooden milking stool," she explains. "White reveals nuances." It can also be surprisingly warm. Instead of basic white paint, Sarah had an artisan spray the walls with a watered-down blend of several creamy hues before troweling the plaster—yielding a rich effect with tinges of gray and putty and yellow that's different in every room.

In this photo: The living room coffee table was once a cider press. Verellen makes the slouchy slipcovered sofa, while the bookcases and trumeau mirror came from Sarah's own store, Chateau Sonoma. Here, Sarah and Darius play with their son Tyge, 3.

A Study in Contrasts

As intended, the backdrop highlights the subtle contrasts of Sarah's vintage scores: the hammered-zinc surface of the breakfast table against the cast-iron chandelier above it. The vivid blue feathers of a stuffed peacock against the worn wood of a century-old clock salvaged from a French train depot (all from the famed Parisian shop Deyrolle). The rough weave of a jute rug against nubby linen slipcovers.

Contrasting Colors

The living-room walls wear a darker custom-mixed color—the perfect foil for a mounted white deer found at an Atlanta flea market. It dons sleigh bells year-round.

Inside a Warm Victorian Home

Antiques dealer Sarah Anderson relied on the tools of her trade, winging low-key drama from timeworn textures and patinas. Consider her California home proof that so-called "cool" neutrals can be as cozy as saturated hues.

Warming Trend

Sarah Anderson had long admired her neighbor's house—a black-and-white Gothic Victorian in Sonoma, California, that anchors a sprawling plot of land. But when the antiques dealer heard the place had been sold four years ago, she felt a sudden and surprising grief. "I didn't realize how badly I wanted to live there, and I'd already missed my chance." Then fate intervened, and the purchase fell through. Sarah's husband, Darius, suggested they go see the property, and, she says, "My dream home became his dream home."

In this photo: In the breakfast nook, weathered oak benches provide seating at a vintage oak florist's table, topped with zinc. The cast-iron chandelier dates to the 1920s; the distressed pine cabinet, by BoBo, only looks old. Sarah had all the walls misted with a custom mix of watered-down paint. The trim here (and throughout) is painted Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore.

Breakfast Nook

After purchasing the home, the couple discovered that, in order to obtain earthquake insurance, they'd need to replace the house's foundation. So they spent a year living in a finished barn out back, while taking the walls down to the studs, carefully removing moldings and windows, then just as carefully reinstalling everything. "Old places have soul," Sarah explains, "and we didn't want to lose any of that."

In this photo: Old maple bread boards, made in the Loire Valley, share shelf space with fine Astier de Villatte porcelain in the breakfast nook's cabinet.

Kitchen

Sarah took measures to preserve things that, while not original to the building, enhance its character—like a 1940s Wedgewood stove, left by previous owners. "So many people told me to ditch that stove for a stainless one, but I couldn't," says Sarah.

In this photo: Sarah outfitted the existing stove with a custom hood; the new fridge, by Heartland, exudes a similar vintage vibe. Offsetting those gleaming white appliances: dark soapstone counters and backsplashes, as well as ash cabinetry painted a muted gray-green (Paris Gray by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint). The wicker stools are by Palecek.

Dining Room

When it came to finding stuff, Sarah knew just where to shop: her store, Chateau Sonoma, which specializes in French country antiques. That's where the dining room cabinet, a 19th-century pine piece with cut-leaf designs, used to dwell, albeit with an astronomical price tag attached. "I secretly didn't want anyone to buy it!" Sarah confesses.

In this photo: Sarah's favorite possession, an 18th-century wooden angel, looks over the dining room. She nabbed the piece in France, where she also bought the antique pine trestle table, oak bistro chairs, and wood-and-iron chandelier.

Hallway

A floating pine shelf offers a spot for bags, shoes, and mail. Steel hooks, from The Land of Nod, corral coats, scarves, and more.

Guest Bedroom

A shag rug, fluffy sheepskin, and chunky fringed throws soften the angles and speak of luxury. So when Shamie divulges that he got most of the accessories at Ikea, West Elm, and CB2, the revelation leads to reverse sticker shock.

In this photo: West Elm's pin-tucked cotton blanket and tasseled throw, a bleached canvas duvet cover by Kriss Lecocq, and Ikea sheets dress the guest room bed. Artist Ramon Lascano crafted the 3-D wall art out of book pages. The walls are painted Metropolitan by Benjamin Moore.

Bright ideas: Sliding barn doors free up floor space in a small bedroom. For the upholstered headboard, swaths of linen bring subtle interest.

Guest Bathroom

Keeping the colors muted and the arrangements spare, Shamie notes, let him and Houston combine high and low finds with offhand ease—not that minimalism came naturally for both halves of this couple. "Bobby is prone to impulsive buying," Shamie says with a sigh. Houston cops to his reputation, adding, "Eric would catch me online shopping and tell me to go back to pickling the walls!"

In this photo: As in the kitchen, Houston relied on Green Demolition for the guest bathroom's cabinets, as well as its Corian countertops. The striped-cotton Turkish towels are by Scents and Feel.

Bobby Houston and Eric Shamie

Though Houston has clearly embraced the slower-paced mountain life, he still gets a rush from his job. Rehabbing houses isn't all that different from making movies, he contends: "You see possibility where nobody else does. You become a fanatic. And after a lot of hard work, you have something to point at and say, 'There it is!'" he explains. "Except with a house, the rewards are much, much sweeter, because you get to live with your labor of love."

In this photo: Shamie (left) and Houston join Sedgwick and Bode, their Spanish water dog, on the deck.

A Modern Spin on Cabin Decorating - Part 2

Dining Area

The rustic setting reminded Houston of his childhood in Chappaqua, New York, where homes seemed to disappear into the trees. So he and Shamie added an abundance of windows to make the house feel like a part of nature, rather than a retreat from it.

In this photo: Houston splurged on the marble-topped Saarinen table, $2,800 at a local antiques shop. Vico Magistretti designed the molded-plastic chairs in the 1960s. The wood-veneer pendant lamp is from Design Within Reach.

Living Area

Though they clad the walls in pine paneling, the cabin-in-the-woods clichés end there: Forgoing a dark stain, Houston pickled the planks himself, conjuring a color that evokes the innards of a tender sapling. He avoided tartans and twiggy rockers in favor of furniture that neither distracts from the view nor pretends to blend with it: molded-plastic Italian chairs from the 1960s, a marble-top Eero Saarinen table, clean-lined sofas slipcovered in ivory and taupe canvas.

In this photo: A photo by Martin Albert mimics the scene outside. A Room and Board sofa and CB2 pouf gather round an antique pine bench.

Cozy Corner

Houston hand-pickled the pine walls of the 1960s ranch house. Here, the couple's French bulldog, Sedgwick, lounges in front of the living area's built-in bookshelves. An Ikea sheepskin softens the 1970s bentwood rocker, which belonged to Houston's father. The tin B was part of a gas station sign.

A Modern Spin on Cabin Decorating

By taking dark color—and clutter—out of the equation, Bobby Houston and Eric Shamie cast their traditional Massachusetts cabin in a modern light. Wood-paneled walls have never looked so fresh!

Pure and Simple

Bobby Houston's been house proud for as long as he can remember. "Even when I was young and struggling, I insisted on living in fabulous places," says the filmmaker, who plunked down a Visa card to buy his first home, a dilapidated midcentury number in Southern California. "Remodeling has always been my secret sideline," he says.

After winning an Oscar in 2005—for Mighty Times: The Children's March, a documentary short about the Birmingham civil rights movement—Houston wrapped up his three-decade movie career and headed to Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to renovate homes full-time. He and his partner, Eric Shamie, launched Hauswork Design, a firm that transforms old residences into vacation rentals. Three years ago, the couple turned one of them—a 1960s rancher in the Berkshire mountains—into their own personal getaway.

In this photo: A pair of slipcovered CB2 sofas flank the den's stone fireplace, accessorized with a handblown glass vase and a vintage kindling bucket.

Bright idea: Set a tray atop a sturdy pouf, like Roost's wood model, for a cool coffee table.

Kitchen

The site the pair looked at was idyllic, with five forested acres rolling out alongside the Umpachene River. The house: not so much. "It was dark, dingy, and depressing," Shamie recalls, "with wall-to-wall carpeting and mice." Then something caught the pair's attention—a gargantuan stone fireplace that faced outside, onto a porch and carport. "We had this classic aha moment, when we knew just what to do," says Houston. The first step? Enclose that porch and carport to create a den, with an open kitchen on the other side of the fireplace.

In this photo: Houston scored the kitchen's salvaged Bulthaup cabinets from Green Demolitions, then wrapped them, and the pine island, in elm slabs. Felt cushions by Canvas top Sawkille stools. The range is Viking.

Bright idea: A simple steel pipe, strung with S hooks, keeps pans, trivets, and utensils in handy reach.

Simple Vignette

On kitchen shelves, ceramic pitchers by Sophie Conran (top shelf) and Tivoli Tile Works (bottom shelf) mingle with an old newel post and a French mustard pot, both on the top shelf.

Office Area

Beasley's ripped leopard-print coat provided the upholstery for this whimsical chair, which accompanies a 1920s ebony desk. An African feather headdress and a black-and-white photo of Paris make for an eclectic mix.

Closet

Beasley transformed a small room into a walk-in closet and bathroom.

Bathroom

Across from the clothing rack, Beasley installed a salvaged clawfoot tub and painted it in Smoke & Mirrors by Benjamin Moore. She regularly swaps out the photos and drawings, though the 1913 dress form always sticks around.

Thea Beasley

When guests come over, it's natural that Beasley's eclectic decor gets them intrigued. If the objects get guests talking, they also tell a story—of a woman who has come into her own along with her home. "All these things we find are pieces of ourselves," she adds. "I've built a future by rummaging through the past."

In this photo: Beasley works at her studio table, which she draped in linen. In the background, painted shutters, unearthed at a flea market, hide an air-conditioning unit.
