A Modern Dining Room and Kitchen Makeover

Operation Renovation

Four years ago, Boston-area native Jessica Bruno, her husband, Tony, and their 3-year-old son, Tony, sold their house and moved back in with Jessica's parents, a meant-to-be-temporary move that ended up shortening Tony Sr.'s commute and drastically reducing their child-care costs. Not long after, Jessica's grandparents moved in, too, and Tony's twin daughters from his first marriage, Alexia and Gabriella, stay over a few weekends a month. The intense bonding ended up being so much fun, the Brunos never left, and it inspired Jessica to start a blog, FourGenerationsOneRoof.com. There she chronicles the budget-wise renovation and decorating projects she regularly tackles, often with the help of her builder dad, Fred. Impressed by her work, Woman's Day enlisted Target to lend the finishing touches to Jessica's latest project: making the kitchen and dining room feel like new.

IN THIS ROOM White ceramic pitchers, $13–$15; white teapot, $13; serving bowls, $25 each; Threshold Olisa flatware, $80 for 45 pieces; Annandale jute area rug, $100 for 5'x7'; graphic weave oblong red toss pillows, $17 each; table runners, $18 each; and ivory chair pads, $10 each; all at Target stores.

Hutch Overhaul

To freshen an old hutch and complement her great-grandmother's Blue Willow china, Jessica added white: paint outside, ceramic pieces inside. WD mounted yellow paper in back to up the effect.

Cozy Combination

The jute rug, off-white chair cushions and natural runner bring coziness and warmth without introducing another strong color or print to the room.
