Room Makeover on a Budget - Part 2

Add Texture
The contrasting finishes of the pieces on display (stenciled burlap, galvanized metal, weathered wicker) make them distinctive enough to pop against painted beadboard.

Keep What Works

Mom Anisa repainted and re-covered this $25 thrift store rocker herself. "It was my first attempt at DIY upholstery, so it's not perfect, but it's still a favorite," she says.

Perfect the Mix

"Not everything needs to match. Items should look like they were collected over time."

For the dining room, which is sandwiched between the kitchen and living room, Anisa shopped around to get the look she wanted. She found the French-inspired wicker end chairs at World Market and the galvanized cafÉ seats at Pottery Barn. For the hutch, she used a glass-front bookcase from Z Gallerie. "China cabinets can look fussy, and this bookcase shows off our dishes just as well," says Anisa.

Upgrade Lighting
Anisa traded out the ceiling fixture for an oversize lantern. When she wants to add a little ambience, she can turn on the wall sconces or glass lamp.
