Room Makeover on a Budget - Part 3

Fill Space Creatively

Anisa painted the $10 papier-mâché letters (JoAnn.com) on the kitchen wall and added sand to the hurricanes (CrateandBarrel.com) on the dining table.

Build from Scratch

"Leaning art against a wall instead of hanging it makes it feel less formal, like part of a collection."

Anisa bought brackets from IKEA and lumber from Home Depot, then painted them both cream to create inexpensive custom-built shelves.

Display What You Love

"Every time I see a pretty white platter—whether it's at an antiques store or HomeGoods—I have to buy it," says Anisa, who refreshes the breakfast nook shelves with such finds. The dining table is a former workman's bench. "I just added a few coats of polyurethane to make it more durable," she explains. Now it's suitable for Ava (5) to work on art projects and Rosa (6 months) to try her first vegetables. A tea cart from the '40s, a wedding gift from Casey's aunt, spans the kitchen and breakfast area.

Let 'Em Hang Out
