Kelley and Greg Motschenbacher aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. After restoring a run-down home and garden in Ojai, California, the couple took a DIY approach to furnishing the place.
Digging Deep
In 2008, when interior designer Kelley Motschenbacher and her contractor husband, Greg, began searching for a weekend escape, they bypassed the obviously pretty and readily inhabitable. "We knew a fixer-upper would be more affordable, and we weren't afraid of the work," explains Kelley, who swears she has a "handyman gene." What she and Greg got—a 1950s ranch home in Ojai, 125 miles northwest of their Newport Beach, California, residence—certainly fit the bill. "It was scary inside and out," Kelley recalls with glee.

Bright idea: Glass pendants from Roost don't block the light—or the view.
Living Room
Kelley approached the interiors with gusto. "I worked side by side with the crew, shoveling, smashing walls, and going on dumpster runs," she recalls. It took a year to rehab the home's bones: Outlets had to be rewired, crumbling pipes replaced, drywall repaired, and pine floors installed.

Bright idea: Kelley turned patinaed kerosene canisters, won on eBay, into lamps for her end tables.
A Comfy Corner
Ease played into her decorating decisions, as well, especially since Millie, the yellow lab, likes to make herself at home in the living room after chasing squirrels. The painted wicker coffee table can be hosed off outside, while the sofa's slipcover, sewn from monogrammed French bed linens, goes into the wash. "It's a very welcoming place," says Kelley. "Maybe too welcoming! People often come right in with their shoes on and kick up their feet."
