A Charming California Ranch and Garden Tour - Part 4

Fruits and Veggies

The Motschenbachers grow more than 50 varieties of edibles.

Kitchen Garden

The couple scavenged stones on the one-acre property to build raised beds, in which Kelley immediately sowed seeds for vegetables and cutting flowers. "I was so excited to see what I could grow!" the designer says. "You get up to Ojai, and you fall into this lifestyle right away. We haven't had to buy lettuce or lemons in ages."

Shady Spot
Two years ago, as the renovation finally wound down and Greg's work shifted nearer to Ojai, the Motschenbachers moved into the house full-time. "We're done, but we're never really done," says Kelley, ticking off their next projects: turning the garage into a bedroom and adding a pool and a chicken coop. She's also determined to get her arborist's license, explaining, "I know it's a goofy idea, but I learned so much about trees!"

The Motschenbachers

Though the couple still spend two or three days a week gardening, "we make a point of cutting it off on Sunday afternoons to barbecue or just veg," Kelley says. "Sometimes you have to give yourself permission to put down the pruning shears."
